No Revs above 3,000

Can someone please advise.
I'm unable to get the revs on my Mercedes over 3,000 rpm?
Details of Mercedes:

*1989 W124 260E Auto
*Bosch CIS-E (KE Jetronic) fuel injection system
*Twin fuel pumps
*2.6 S.O.H.C. 6 Cyl

Any help/adviseMadvise would be much appreciated.

Welcome, is this when stationery or when driving? If stationery, the engine speed is limited to 3,000 revs. If it is when driving then the car is going into Limp mode as there is a problem and the engine speed is restricted to prevent damage. Do you have any warning lights lit? Have you had the car long? Have you had any work done on it recently? Whereabouts are you?

As this is an early car you'll need a blink code reader or something that can read pre-OBD2 codes.

You may have a blocked cat (if it has one fitted).

Probably needs a new MAF.

Had similar problem with 1986 BMW E23 would not rev and some times very rough idle. Fixed with new MAF.

Most likely to be a MAF or if diesel the EGR valve

No maf or egr on this car. Borderline if it has a cat. Are you trying to rev it in neutral of whilst driving?

Yes you are correct no maf, egr or cat.
Can't get over 3,000 rpm when in neutral or driving.
Any idea?
