I've had an Alpine CD/radio in my 1995 E300D estate for a couple of years without a problem and then a few days ago no sound would come out of it - there was a slight crackle coming from the dashtop speakers when it was switched on and then nothing.

Thinking that there must be a problem with the head unit I picked up a cheap Kenwood replacement and still there is no sound.

I've plugged the new one in using the ISO connector and don't have sockets on the new one for what I think are sub-woofer cables/plugs.

Power is going into the unit.

Any one have any ideas about what could be going on?

Thanks.

Now fixed, and because of the nature of the fault it might be of interest to others. The problem was one of the leads to the speakers (at the speaker end), earthing on the speaker casing and causing a short circuit - this then stopped both speakers working through in-built protective circuitry in the radio.

Reason? The replacement dashtop speakers (which came from the source recommended on this site) are I think slightly larger than the originals (at least my originals) at the bottom end so are a much tighter fit than the originals which had the effect of pushing the terminal connections against the body of the speaker. A wrap of plastic insulating tap fixed it.

Why it took two years for the fault to manifest itself I couldn't say.

Pleased you fixed it,, the chances were that it was the paint on the edge of the hole at first and the paint wore off eventually
