Hi,No sound on Radio, TV, Navigation, or Phone, 2008 W221 S320CDI just started doing this, May seem daft but seems to happen when the car gets hot since the weather has warmed up? and when it goes off i have checked the Amplifier in the boot and the cooling fan is not running? could it be a problem with the Fan, and the system shuts down? there are other similar posts on the US forums but no fix suggested apart from possible consumer battery needs replacing? any help much appreciated, cheers Dave

Its very likely that the fan not spinning is causing the amplifier to overheat. The fans in the command units are known for being noisy and causing this issue.

Mercedes will want to replace the unit, an electronics repair center could replace the fan on its own.

You need to find out if the fan should run all the time. The amp may not be hot enough for the fan to come on.

This is a common fault. The amplifier just dies so you are left with no sound at all. The navigation still works but - no sound. The key here is can you see the radio stations on the screen though?

We have replaced around six of these units and they cost around £1800! Not cheap. Occasionally we have been able to repair them which is an awful lot cheaper.

My W221 has the same fault and Merc want £450 +Vat for the tuner and £300 +Vat for the labour and I know that's probably a simple fix. I'm so disappointed that this has happened. starting to loose the love with MB. I want to get it fixed though. Does anyone know a repairer in MK?

See my thread here
http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/showthread.php?t=130698

Now my CL, the same as your 221 did display the pictures and navigation.

Its quite simple, the only wake up on the car is the comand N40 head unit, the Harmon amp and the battery control module.

Just do a quick test on STAR and it will probably say fault on the battery module (no wake up) and fault on the comand. Its possible the fault is in the head unit or in the battery module.

The X34/14 connector is under the carpet front passenger side, this is where the 3 things plug in.

If the batteries have been disconnected and joined up in the wrong order, this can give problems, and this can lock up. The starter battery must be connected first, then the rear one. the front battery never needs to be disconnected to isolate the car interior electrics. to disconnect the rear battery you just remove the 13mm bolt on the right side of the boot under the cover, it has a black cable on it.

In my case and thread I left the 12volt wake up plug out and it came back to life as it can wake up on the MOST optical ring.

Your head unit is not waking up, thats the way it looks to me, it will say in STAR.

Hi Malcolm,

Thanks for this I will try this & also I see another thread posted by Dave last year, mentioned that the rear boot amp was covered in diesel soot, so if you have any pdf images DIY for the two possible fixes RE: Kardon HArmon Amp issues.

I do not think that you have a Harmon amp fault as the head unit is not waking up

It will come up on STAR, get it plugged in again and see if you are directed to the X30/14 connector

From the pictures you sent your head unit is waking up as you are getting a Mercedes logo on the screen. If it wasnt waking up you would get nothing. This isnt a wakeup issue at all.

The fault has all the symptoms of the hard disk not booting up or a booting issue with the head unit. The symptoms are completely different if the MOST ring was at fault or the tuner/amp was playing up.

Your MOST ring faults are STORED not CURRENT so this idicates that your MOST ring is fine now the voltage has been restored.

Yes the fault is more to do with the head unit K40/3 than anywhere else, so if its not booting up there probably is no fix other than replacement.

Can anyone offer any service on these.

The instruction for removing it can be found in the DIY section under "adding DAB to a 221/216"

Maple audio in Bath offer excellent repair services. A lot of the car audio shops use them, as we have in the past. We now use a local chap whoose hobby is stripping and repairing electronic components.

For some comand units, replacement hard disks are available. We have changed a few for customers experiencing near identical issues.

Hello, you are talking about radio stations they show up or not?
Well mine is showing up, but no sound coming from speakers. Fact is front center dash speaker seems faulty. I have brought another amplifier used one, after plugin all worked next 3 days(only center dash speaker did not work), then no sound and radio stations disappeared.
After that I changed back to my old amplifier - radio stations appeared but no sound.
Any suggestions?

I would be returning the amplifier you bough as faulty, as it has the common fault of dropping off the ring!

Yes, but this amplifier that show up radio stations was looked over by module repairer and he told me that board seems fine so he did not discover anything to be faulty.

but you replaced it with another and it all worked fine (apart from the center speaker) so it must be the amp....

or another intermittent fault, but, if the original amp did not intermittently function, its very unlikely!
