I'm starting to get a hankering for a R230 SL whether a 500 or 55 AMG. What can be wrong with me, I've only had mine for 2 years. Is it really worth paying the extra for a 55?

Retire to a dark room and lie down until the urge passes. Works for lots of things ! ;-)

My chum has a 500 and he tried both, saying that the 55 wasn't necessary.

This is getting to be a serious problem 'cos I really like the idea of a 911. They are quite sexy though aren't they?

Has anybody had experience of both?

I've owned 911's for the last nine years and after the first day of owning my first one, I vowed never to own another type of car. They are, in my opinion, the greatest piece of engineering in the world. If you are toying between a 911 and a 500 then there should be no difficulty in making that choice.

I only happen to own a Merc because I need a workhorse and the one I have is perfect for that role.

Thanks Lordluvitt, I've always wanted one and the 911 (996) cabrios are within financial range now and they are nice aren't they? I do like luxury though and never having sat in one yet am wondering how they stack up against the SL500 in terms of it.

Looking
What a very constructive post .

The 55 is something else completely - they are at least £10k more than an equivalent R230 500 - not seen one for under £40k - if I buy another Merc it would probably be a 55 AMG of some sort!

The 996 is a totally different car to the SL. Both do what they do very well - but if you like luxury then the Porsche won't be for you (a 997 is a step on but way too expensive). The interior feels cheap by comparison - a 993 would be a closer comparison but the design is very dated. You have to compromise - the 911 is some 500kg lighter than the Merc.

The best thing would be to drive one as they are very involving and feel like no other car. The ride makes the SL feel woolly and bloated however at motorway speeds they require more concentration. I chose a manual as I'd become lazy with three SLs and was the right choice for me however the tiptronic is excellent and possibly a bit quicker. The sound is glorious with the switchable sports exhaust (PSE) :D though I do miss the V8.

You have impeccable taste so really can't go wrong with any of the cars you're looking at ;).

ive driven the 996 and i agree its an awesome car , doing my job i get to drive alot of cars i couldnt otherwise afford :) . one car i rate as better than the 996 but a slight bit more expensive atm due to its relative newness is the jaguar xkr (new shape one) awesome all round motor imo. not sure which id choose between the merc and porsche though.

Interesting I have been asking the same q about the R230 and whether is it worth upgrading the R129 SL320. The Sl500 R230 looks good value for money now, as does the SL55 AMG. One part of me says the 1999 SL320 has only doen 50k and is immaculate, does everything required and probably has more luggage space than the R230 - plus it owes me nothing and is not really depreciating. Perhaps I should get another 8 months out of it and sell it in the summer..................:-?

I have driven the 996 and 997, both are amazing cars and so wel made but yes, they are more sparse and less luxurious compared to an SL. I guess it depends what you are looking for. :)

The 230 has much more boot space than the 129

Helen

Ive had two 911's see pic, two of the best cars I've ever owned. the black carrera 2 3.6 I used to to do about 20k a year in it what ever the conditions and it never failed to once. They can be suprisingly practical to.
911 tends to make me drive agressively, the CL500

Really Malcolm? Do you mean with the roof up? I looked at one on Saturday with the roof down and it looked very small compared with the R129

Thanks for the replies guys, there is some really constructive information there. It certainly gives me something to ponder over and I guess I'll have to drive both before I can decide. I think that the AMG might be a bit too much for me at the moment but I know one thing, it certainly will not be a hasty decision as it will probably have to last longer than the 2 years that I normally keep a car for.

I will just have to keep my eyes open and see what comes up for sale. I feel safer with a car from a dealer though.
