I'm hearing a low whine from the transmission that, gear-by-gear (automatic), raises in pitch as the car accelerates.
The car's done around 110,000 miles.
Can anyone advise what the problem is likely to be?
    Thanks,
    Peter

Tyres excessively worn ? Maybe fit new ones .
Rear differential wear , change the oil (cheap job)
Change gearbox oil and filter if last change was in excess of 40k miles

Propshaft centre bearing is a possibility.

As mentioned it could be anything , noise travels in larger cars .
For instance I once had a Bmw e34 that had a rattle from gearbox area so expected the exhaust support bracket to be bad but upon inspection was ok... forward a few months and under rear of car and crawling out I held onto rear exhaust pipe and it rattled and it turned out one captive mounting bolt needed a new washer as it had been whittled away and had a 3mm gap which let it squeak over light bumps.

How loud is it? My 2005 E320 (722.9) makes some slight whining noises at low speed that I attribute to the gearbox. Hasn't gotten any worse in 9,000 miles so I've ignored it.

Prop bearing or a clip that holds the parking brake cable away from the prop shaft...
