Noise on full lock

I'm getting a a loud tapping noise on a full lock. I have a c220 cdi, 2001,
37K on the clock. I suspect the power steering pump. Any ideas anyone ?

Checked both, fluid slightly low. But did'nt make any difference. It's with the garage (George Frasiers in Wembley) who reckons it's whole pump that needs replacing. I never heard one of these failing -is it common ?
