noise when towing caravan

when towing my van, when hitting 55mph i experience loud noise from beneath car. no vibrations felt and noise goes when i go thro 55 any one any ideas as local garage clue less. car has broken rear spring, could this somehow be the cause of this puzzleing noise

Would be the place to start, for the general safety of the car if nothing else..

also check exhaust is well clear of suspension etc under such loading situations. could just be resonation at a certain point in the revs that you only notice when cruising

I'm with turbopete ......... you can get some unnerving resonation (word?) ......... when under extreme load .......... my Passat used to have some interesting sounds when pulling the van.

It could be the center bearing on the prop or engine mounts
