Hi all

I just recently become a new Mercedes owner ,
After years of having Merced’s Benz owned by father one being a 190e petrol ,
I decided to take the plunge .
I purchased a 2009 c180k auto with 80k miles .

the Reason for my post is if my engine noise is normal on start up from cold , it has a loud whirling then quiets down after 20-30 seconds ,
Also engine does not sound smooth is this the norm are they common to sound fairly loud ?
Also from cold driving car seems not to be smooth in gear changes quite a stutter especially in 2nd .
Really appreciate your views or experience guys

thank you ...

Difficult to say without hearing it, try recording it and post back.

The whirring could be the secondary air injection which runs at start up for about 30 seconds when the engine is cold.
The gearbox could be oil level related or in need of a full change at this mileage, should be changed along with the filter every 40K.

Hi that’s a great help
I did actually think it could be gearbox oil ,
My bro has a m3 and a gearbox oil change said the car ran much smoother .
In regards to the secondary air injection would this need replacing? thank you guys for all your reply’s

My C180 secondary air injection system makes a noise on start from cold for about 30 seconds and then clears as it shuts off (no pump in this system), doesn't come in to play when warm, just a normal sound (if that's what it is) injects air into the exhaust from the compressor to help the after cat O2 sensor stay clean with the rich mixture on start up.

Ok do some come with secondary air injection systems ?
How would I determine if mine has ?

mid there any filters etc that could be cleaned to quiet the noise down ?

I did notice that when the car is warmed up it quiets down .

also the engine temperature sits Just below 90 is this normal ?
Thank you

What are the first six numbers of your engine number? It'll be 271xxx.
You should be able to get it from the V5 or by doing a VIN decode.
