Hi,

I have a '97 c36 70k.  When he car/engine is cold the exhaust note is pronounced at 2-2.5k rpm.  As the engine/exhaust warms up, the noise subsides, probably a little noisier than it should be though!!  When it gets wet/cold it gets noisier, like if it starts raining hard or you go through a puddle.

My Father in law said that it wasn't noisy as I drove off yesterday yet it seemed noisy in the car.

Any ideas??

Cheers

Take it to a local independant you trust. Don`t bother with the multiples such as Kwik-fit-you-up, who will quote £600 to tighten a bracket and replace brake master cylinder!!! Don`t laugh - it happened to me!!!

Sounds like you have a "cold rasp" which even to us exhaust system designers is a difficult thing to get rid of. (sounds a bit metallic?) Only certain engines/systems when put together produce this noise, and a similar spec system will not guarantee curing the problem. A new one may "age" in just the same way.

If  it is a cold rasp, the only solution is for a completly different design of system (from the manifolds), live with it, or sell the car.....
If you think that is harsh, just think about if we get one at the development stage, we only have 1 choice, re-design, throwing months of work away.

Noisy Exhaust....!!!!

Hehe, look for the obvious, he says!

I put it on the ramps at my Dad's house and got under the car for a closer look.  It turned out that a front silencer box had split all round one end of the can.  I contacted a quality welder on our local industrial estate, he arranged a local garage to remove the exhaust, from the manifold to the rear box, still in one piece (more ways than one!) and he welded all round.  He only welds Ally and Stainless, at first he was reluctant as he was thinking it was an olf ford fiesta!, but on assurance that it was a quality stainless exhaust he undertook the job.

Overall cost, £80.  I consider myself lucky to avoid a massive expense and have made friends with two nice people!!

The moral of the story.....'dont drink paint'

:D
