Hello All !

Im new to MB ownership and forums!

I recently bought a 2001 C220 cdi estate with 120k miles on. I've down a further 7000 miles but a couple of weeks ago I noticed the steering getting noisy. Then last week the steering became very stiff when the car wasnt moving (ie parking). My local MB specialist changed the pump which freed up the steering but the noise has returned (within 200 miles) and he thinks it could be the rack. At £1600 plus fitting plus vat I'm hoping it might be something else. I dont want to just leave it and burn out another pump. The specialist seems to think there might be a faulty valve in the rack which can only be sorted with a new rack. I'm thinking of going back to an Audi if I cant fix it without a new rack but I'll miss the MB if that happens. Anyone got any ideas...

Thanks in advance

Check your fluid level again, it could be a leak from any of the pipes before the rack.
Is there any fluid on the ground after you move off?

im sure someone on here got a recon rack for a similar problem and it was about £250! surely for an MB specialist, it cant be such an awkward job it would require spending £1000+ on labour, can it?

I've had the rack replaced on my C220 CDI and it's a recon one at £325.00. You may be able to get it cheaper. Let me know how you get on.

c220 cdi estate steering pump

I also have from new a 2001 90,000 miles estate with a noisy steering pump.Specially noisy at slow speeds.Garage changed pump 10 months ago...no change to noise. They tell me not dangerous. They say fluid in pump is very aerated and now suggest change reservoir. Then they say if that does not work ...change rack.So basically they don't really know.During year since pump changed the noise has stayed the same,so no real motivation to spend more money on the problem.
