Hi all, I have an E320T (W124) and really like it. My question is, how noisy should it be on a cold start???? It sounds like a rough diesel on initial start up(lasts approx 3-4 mins) , but once warm, purs like it should. Is this normal???? Any ideas?

Regards

The valve gear or the timing chain can make a noise on start up, when was the oil last changed and what oil is in there, if it last for 4 mins,it is more likely to be valve running gear

The last oil change was done by main dealer in Holland(Smeets). Only due to the fact that my head gasket needed replacing!!!!! Ouch, 1500 euros:(
It made the same noise before and after the gasket replacement. What oil do you recommend, and is there anything else i can do to try and reduce the noice???? Preferably not costing 1500 euros!;)

That'll be the air pump, they run from cold for 2-3 mins and pump air into the engine/exhaust for faster cat warm up. always noisey and cost a fortune. leave it or remove, your choice, if removed you have to get a shorter belt.

Many thanks Star, you're a Star:D
I take it that it isnt a problem then if it can be removed? I will leave it on though if it isn't going to cause any harm.

doesn't seem to be a problem, i expect the cat just takes longer to warm up,but i find that hard due to the extended gear shift on these models when cold.
