i have a noisy tappet around 10,000 and 15,000 RPM. i have flushed the engine oil and renewed it but has made little difference. Is there anything else i can do? are tappet sets easy to change and does anyone have a DIY walkthrough on how to do the job?

Also can anyone recommend a fuel injector place in west yorkshire or nearby as i want a price for testing and recalibration. Im thinking maybe getting noise from one of them after using biodiesel and lossning the gunk in the fuel lines.

BTW....is a 1999 V reg E300 turbodiesel.

thanks in advance

I would imagine a tapet would be quite tough job to do. I think the cams would have to come out, this would be a tricky job! I am not great on the pre cdi engine so hopefullt some eles will contribute shortly!!

Just an update. after driving today the noise seems to have quietened down loads. must have needed to be driven after the oil change. i used 5/30 semi synthetic which will be dumped and flushed again before putting some decent 10/40 back in. hopefully the noise will completly disappear

Wonderful what clean oil will do, and STILL people WILL neglect oil changes!

Glad you've got a good result dirtymonkey29.

Keep us posted on the longterm outcome.

Try the old east end car dealers cure for noisy tappets. Sawdust in the engine oil. Add slowly as the engine is turning over so as to not block the oilways. Get off the floor of any local butchers shop free.
(SEE NOTE BELOW)

ONLY JOKING.
DO NOT DO THIS.
No claims entertained if this is done.

ive had the car 7 months now and did a service myself when i got it. oil, oil filter, air filter, fuel filter, pre fuel filter needs doing as i got the wrong one last time. previous to that it has full mb service history. ive also cleaned the maf, breather pipe from head to turbo, and other pipes as per the maf cleaning diy thingy. i intend to change the glow plugs as i have the common (or so im led to believe) glowplug light comes back on for a short time after starting. and also want the injectors checking and possibly re-calibrating if needed. I love cars and like them running sweet so never neglect, i also do as much as i possible can myself so i know stuff has definantly been done, and done well.....perfectionist that i am, haha.
anyway if anyone can recommend an injector place west yorkshire id be greatful of a reply.

thanks for all your replies.

tappets

had a tappet noise twice with my 350 sl an every time either side(old v8 engine) needed cam lifters etc, etc, but thats prob due too my car not being used daily. dont mean too be a angel of doom but when mercs make that tappet noise get a specialist merc man too find the fault an the source the parts via merc breakers or euro car parts. i got a cl 420 too an when that goes tits up i normally do what i've just said. find fault. get part. an fit yourself if your brave with a spanner, you'll be suprised how good tec wise you get when it saves you money. hope info was some help mate.
