Depending on the wetness of the windscreen the wiper seems to hiccup at about the 10 oclock position and also thumps very loudly at the ends of the wipe. I have inspected and greased the extending mechanism and it all looks ok. It does have an aftermarket blade and carrier fitted to the original arm.
It does look a little flimsy compared to the original so could this be the problem. Also MB of Truro say it is necessary to remove the manifold to replace the no.1 glowplug. A £150 job so I am thinking of doing it myself, any suggestions welcome.

I think what you might be hearing when it thumps at the ends of the strokes is the wiper blade itself "rolling over" during the reversing of direction. I believe this is more likely to happen if the blade is thicker/taller than the Mercedes blade or when the Mercedes blade gets older and loses its stiffness which means it rolls and/or shifts in the mount a bit.

That is just my theory. Hopefully others with better knowledge will jump in on this thread!

As xvvz says there should not be much if any free play on the end of the arm where the blade fits. A blade with the same drag as the original should be used. The mechanics at MB are told to check that the arm is parrallel with the screen. The arm should be stopped in the center of the screen, you put a straight edge across the flat of the arm, and it should sit parallel, if it does not, hold the botton of arm with an padded adjustable spanner and twist the arm at the top with another spanner so that it is.
