OK so being new to Mercs and diesels I have got myself concerned.

Only noticed today after parking up. Had done about 20 fastish miles with 5 mins of idling when home while I tried to sort something out. 25c outside temps.

Switched off, and when got out noticed a warm mildly sweet smell from the engine grills and arches. Wouldn't say as strong as coolant that I've smelt on other cars, but seemed more than just 'hot metal' as well.

Could be dpf regen?

Coolant level looks stable (bit will monitor) and cant see any leaks - engine looks immaculate. Temps normal. Didn't smell inside..

Probably overthinking...anyone else ?

It was probably the DPF Regen

Thanks @JBell . Engine seemed like the centr of the sun when opened the bonnet. It's getting a 100 miler on Sat so should sort itself.

I certainly didn't catch wiff of it at the weekend on a 250 mile round trip.

Oddly there is still a slight hint of it now a few hours on, but guess it could linger and outside is still 20c

Thanks again. What a friendly forum!

Hopefully I'll be able to answer something one day as I get to know the car

650 degrees C at the exhaust at engine out during regen. Very hot.

Should ideally keep above 50 mph during regen to avoid baking and running polymers in the engine bay.

Regen occurs approx every 400-700 miles

All seems a normal DPF regen.
I dont notice any change at all with the car during operation during a regen, it feels totally normal.
You smell it and you feel the heat near the car.

You also notice it more just after you received the car taken it for a drive. If you've just bought the car, chance are that it's been started, engine running for a while and then turned off. Then moved to be serviced, maybe washed/ valeted etc so the dealership hasn't given it a good run for a while. That means a DPF regen as soon as you do longer journey to clear the backlog. Once you start using it normally you don't normally notice it that much

Great point. It spent a week doing a few miles between garages for servicing, tyres, mot and brakes. Then I went straight on a 300 mile trip...

I smelt it the following day after a 13 miles round trip...so maybe it activated during that.

Another 100 miles this weekend so it may complete it.
