Hi, I'm trying to buy a nice Mercedes Sprinter 2009, which has been SORN'd for some time due to ill health. It has now failed the MOT on just the passenger airbag light stuck on and the washers not working. Drives fine, but now can't move it from the MOT station because it can't pass the MOT. It's at a general garage and they can't/won't investigate the fault beyond plugging it into their computer thingy and not being able to clear the airbag fault (there were other lights on ABS, Parking, engine but they have now cleared - I'm aware they will probably come back when it's driven.) Problem is that Mercedes can't look at it for 3 weeks. Can't find an auto-electrician who could look at it mobile to see if the fault can be remedied, as most of them don't seem to have access to the Merc software to see the actual fault. Any suggestions? It's really putting me off buying any Merc, which is a shame, since everyone raves about them

Why would that put you off buying any merc.....

You should have a used a competent garage and not one that leaves you high and dry without a motor.

Try finding a merc indy that can tow it away or organise getting moved to a better garage.

If you dump it at mercedes, I am sure they will look at is sooner, Ideally you want a mercedes commercial like mertrux .

MOT had to be done close to the sellers home. Not my area. Phoned lots of MOT centres but most couldn't do it due to the height restriction. Wanted to pay Mercedes for MOT but they couldn't do it for 3 weeks. Trying to get Merc roadside assist to do it but it's really expensive. Willing to pay to tow to any Northampton garage but no-one can guarantee they can look into/reset the fault. I'm worried this is just the start of a very frustrating experience with sensors.

I wander if it’s something a bit more specialist than what the garage has. E,g needs specific modules or access to the right areas of the diagnostics.

E.g I had a sensor that went off in the Volvo a few years ago a couple of times. Iirc it was air bag related an only happened when a fat guy who does my alignment sat on the edge of the seat. (Didn’t put the two together at the time). Anyway on Volvo specialist (Vida) software could read and reset the light.

Stuff doesn’t like being park up so it could be ok once it sees use routine again and faults cleared.

Have you actually purchased the vehicle yet ?

If not then it is not your problem , if you really want it then give the seller a stupidly low offer then get it transported to your house at your cost , spend £200 on a code reader and have a go at fixing it yourself.

A better option would be to look for another one that has an MOT and that you can actually use.

I'm not far from Northampton and have kit capable of correctly reading codes (recently diagnosed stepsons Vito). If you can get me access outside Monday to Friday 9-5 I can read codes for you and you can go from there.

Can you reset an SRS code?

Yes providing there is no underlying fault that will turn it straight back on.

Hi, I’m using an iCarsoft CR PRO on my mercedes and is reading all modules etc. I can borrow you the scanner, maybe you can erase the errors. Where about is the garage in Northamptonshire ?

Thanks axelcls. Are you able to PM me your phone number, I need to pass it back to the owner as he's in the area. I don't live nearby.

And decent garage can look into and reset the fault (code). If there is an underlying fault then that needs to be recitified and that depends if you want to pay or not.

Still dont understand why the seller is not taking care of any of this.

All cars have sensors and sensors do fail. Whats the worry....
