Hi all,

I have a couple of questions about tuning my '59 plate E350 CDI 231bhp, and tuning in general:

1) I just plugged my iCarsoft in and got the below info. Does it tell us if that means my car can be mapped 1) via OBD, 2) by removing the ECU but not having to open it up on the bench, or 3) it has to be removed and opened up completely? Here's the info

Control Unit: CDI6-CAN
Supplier: Bosch
MB Number: 6429010200
Hardware Status: 30/08
Software Status: 22/12
Diagnosis Identification: 020309

2) My second question is - how can you actually make adjustments if it's not done via OBD while on the rolling road? Surely options 2 and 3 are not really proper maps, if so?

Are tuners really going to open up the ECU, flash it, glue to back together, put it back in the wheel arch, run the rolling road, and then repeat the whole process each time they want to make an adjustment?

If not, isn't it the same as a generic flash?

Thanks and apologies for the naive questions :)

Yours will map via OBD, they have full virtual read and write on that.
Re mapping in the bench then rolling road, they take it in and out multiple times, don’t reseal it back together once they are happy with the map, it’s one of the reasons the cost is much higher due to the additional work needed. It’s actually the reason they do a before map dyno run, so they already know on that first removal roughly what they need to adjust, after that any subsequent changes are just fine tuning.

That's great, thank you! Glad it can be done via OBD, hopefully that will be a bit cheaper then :)

Thanks for the clarification on the bench method too!

Around £300-£350 depending on who you go to, as you probably know both GAD, MSL and Big Fish Tuning are highly regarded in Mercedes tuning, just depends on your location

Good afternoon,

Many of the EDC17 CP10 ECU's found in the 231bhp version cannot be done via OBD due to unstable protocols developed. The CP46/57 and higher before switching to MD1 can be done via OBD.

Also since the early days things have come along with BSM (Bosch Service Mode) so even when ECU removal is required opening of ECU to access BOOT isn't required.

But yes so what we do with the 231bhp versions usually goes like this....... Let it cool and get stock data on the rollers, then get the car off or jack up on the dyno still and remove ECU from the vehicle and Bench not BOOT the ECU and apply our Stage 1 and then test, log, test, log and remove the ECU again for any changes if EGT's are climbing a little too much or IATs are a little too high or what ever the vehicle needs at the time.

So shouldn't be any worry with cracking the lid and resealing anymore as all tools pretty much now allow for ECU access without processor access.

You are correct if its flashed and tested once its a one size fits all file and of course I wouldn't imagine most are getting the car back off the dyno to make adjusts but that can be said for most who "Tune" very little ACTUAL testing happens only power runs, nothing logged or analysed.

Also when people say "I had my car live mapped" also isn't a thing and hasn't been for years as all ECUs cannot be accessed while the car is indeed running so logs have to be made in real time or with logging tools and then adjustments made.

Any other info feel free to pop a message

Many thanks

Thanks Anthony! That's great info.

Is there a way I can figure out which ECU I have, perhaps using my iCarSoft MB2.0? Or will all 231BHP ECUs be taken out of the car as a matter of precaution?

Thanks again

Ed

Yes all 231bhp models have the CP10 ECU it was the 265bhp version which first got the CP45 and then the 258bhp models with AdBlue rubbish got the CP57/64 which are all stable via OBD

But CP10 I would always say bench for safety, of course its a pain in the bum bum on an E so its great when I get one in that's a 231bhp C class lol just under the bonnet

Many thanks
