There are a number of inexpensive mini-testers on the market (approx £25) that support the OBD2 16-pin interface. However, my car has the 38-pin diagnostic OBD2 socket (in the fuse panel). Does anyone know of an adapter that can convert between the two interfaces.

All you need to fault code read an MB is, an LED, joined to a ressistor, with a switch to remove codes and 2 bits of wire. Cost £3 Max

fault code reading

Hi Tamrsoft,

your 38 pin skt is not ODB2, but as TV says you can read codes from it as flashes from an LED. This man

http://pages.prodigy.net/jforgione/MB_X11.html

gives a good drawing of how to make a tester using just a switch and LED plus other simple bits. The pin numbers of the 38 pin he gives dont match the ones I have listed, but I have the correct numbers if you need them. Ive havnt made one yet as at present I dont have any faults (1995 C250 diesel). I did look at the 38 pin connector and found that the pin size needed is 1mm dia. Conveniently this is the size of of pin in 9 pin serial D connectors. If you feel confident about making one up, I can post the fault codes, from one of the commercial data CDs
Regards Peter

Thanks for all your responses, I am very interested in your suggestions, I have an electronics design background so I should be able to manage the construction.
The engine is a 2001 E220 CDi, the current diagnostic socket is in the drivers side fuse bay and I assume is not an industry standard socket. I assumed that it was still an OBD2 signal interface even if the mechanical connector was different. I have a list of all the Mercedes OBD2 fault codes and again I assume it is the same across all models. Correct me please if any of my assumptions are wrong.
