The space in the fuse box is normal because than others , all the fuse boxes are made the same with the same amount of fuse contacts .This is done because some cars have more extras in them .Like the basic model wont have that extra comfort item fitted that the top of the range model will have . So that fuse is left out of the fuse box... The fault will be in the odometer in am thinking.
The light going dim might be the back bulb .Can you see anything in the lcd panel , try a flash lamp to see if you can see the millage .You have a knob to intensify the brightness have you turned this up and down a few times in case they are not making contact .
But if it is blank it a bigger problem . And the console will need repairing or replacement .
I find this for the fuse box but i can see another one for the w140S this one i post just said it was a W140 You never said what your model was only W140? The red marking is for some other project so ignore it.
