Help!!

I have read the many threads on this forum relating to approved oil types for the various vehicle models.... MY head hurts!

At the last service my W211 E320cdi was replenished with Castrol Magnatec 10W40 (MB 229.1). The dealer kindly removing the fully synthetic Visco 7000, choosing to replace it with this inferior grade.
According to my owners handbook, only the MB specifications for service products 229.3 and 229.5 apply to the E320 diesel engines and not 229.1 under which Magnatec is listed.
See:http://www.whnet.com/4x4/oil.htmlfor details.

If this is correct I have the wrong oil.
Can anyone advise?

Yes, that's the wrong spec. How much have you paid for that?
:-(

Just under 9 quid a litre...what a bunch of t***ers.
Unfortunately its 7k since the service so not as if its a recent thing.
Check out my last threads for details of the dealer...they are one and the same!!:(

If its a EURO IV engine then it should be "low ash" - 229.31 or 229.51. I also recollect that it needs a certain type of filter.

The 229.31 gives an intial 9k miles service interval and 229.51 should be set to 12k miles.

The whole issue of oil type and service interval for a W211 is very complicated - it took me 8 months to sort it out with MB and my local dealer.

Was an E300TD, now a Lexus LS400
Magnatec isn't very good. It didn't even last 10,000 miles in mine.

I stick to Mobil 1 now.

Its not a Euro IV so the filter isn't an issue (luckily as I'm sure the dealer would have cocked this up as well). Numbers are similar : Oils listed under 229.3 for 9k and 229.5 for 12k. It took me roughly 30 minutes to find this info all by myself. Aren't the dealers supposed to be trained!!

For owners in southern Scotland - I visited Deutsch Marque Independant in Edinburgh today and had the car serviced properly. They provided a very efficient and freindly service at a competetive price (and they used Mobil1!), Highly recomended!

..... beware John R Weir of Perth!
