Yes it is 1/2" ID , the same size as the existing breather tube . I will consider the idea of insulation , but I've never read anything about that in my catch can research .
When you say 'drip tray' , do you mean the salmon tin piece I've got below the turbo inlet seal , well that is still there at the moment , but I may remove it if nothing gets through from the can .

yes

Based on the fact that it runs alongside the engine and sits over the exhaust manifold then any insulation on the pipework would reduce the amount of heat in the pipes which could lead to condensation in the pipes - the opposite of what you are trying to achieve. Just my twopenneth's worth.

cold air drops out moisture hot air holds it.

so when you first start its raining inside, then the air should hold any moisture and drag it back in the turbo (which will help performance). A bottle will allow it to cool and drop out filling the bottle up, making things look bad when all was normal before you modified it. what we want is excessive oil to drop out and moisture to go round and back in. I'd want the in and out holes of the catch can to be at different heights (inlet below outlet) and everything insulated

Hi guys, I have a few pictures to share of the inside of the PCV valve "Hockey Puck" from a 2008 E320 OM642 engine. As someone has stated either in this forum or I'm not sure where the seal can tear. As you can see the seal in my original PCV valve is torn. It is 10 years old. I don't know how you can inspect for this since the brand new one allows air to flow in either direction easily and you can't open it without breaking the plastic locks. So how can someone verify if theirs is still good?

I'm not sure that you can , unless you happen to have a catch tank fitted which maybe shows an increase in oil going through the pcv valve ??
Either way looks like you need a new one , they have improved it but you have to buy the whole piece as one which runs to the turbo intake .

they modified them

should have bigger red bit and a clamp on the connector to the turbo inlet. if you haven't got the bigger red bit, bin and buy the later design about £90 (all in one with a hose and the new oil separator )

Thanks for your thoughts on what to do with the PCV. What do you think about this inplace of the orange silicon Turbo inlet? Looks like it is made for Chrysler 300's but the replies at Kraftwerk (in German) seem to indicate that it will fit a Mercedes OM642. Does the "Batwing" need to be modified?

Yes , the end of the batwing needs to be modified by cutting it down . There is also a new batwing that has a modified seal to prevent leaks m but it is £275 new from MB . I while ago I modified a salmon tin to fit underneath the turbo inlet seal which collects any drips of oil sludge and which let me know when the orange seal leaked . I have recently when I installed the catch can put a small amount of high temp silicone on the orange seal to stop it leaking which seems to work well at the moment .

Just a little thread clean up , in case anyone followed it . I have now taken the catch can off the engine when I fitted a new pcv a few weeks ago after some unrelated actuator problems (I didn't want to cut into the new pcv) . The oil sludge picture is a result of 5k miles . image.jpeg image.jpeg

It's a grey sludge , may have water in it but it has never seperated out to be visible

I would say its mostly emulsified water. Looks fine. Not much for 5000 miles.

Looks like it's doing its job, with a useful amount of oil NOT going into the inlet. I would imagine the water contains many acids and other undesirable substances that are better left out of the inlet as well.

If you don't get any performance issues, I think you can call this a worthwhile mod.

When it warms up a bit, I'll look into something like this.....well done for being the pioneer!

Diesel oil very good with creosote / creosote substitute as it stays black for years , petrol engine oil on the other hand loses colour within two years.

mix 1 lt black with 4 lt white spirit bin doing all wood in garden 4 ten yr .no issues and no oil to take to dump. DONT DO SEATS .!!!!

bit of a thread resurrection !!!!
I read this and it was very useful as i am thinking/going to fit an oil catch can to see if it will stop a very slight oil leak at the turbo, which i think is oil mist then condensation inside the turbo pressure side and getting past the rear seal.
We will see

If it's leaking past the rear seal why not fix the seal?
