Anyone know off hand what size the BIG hex driver needs to be to remove the fill plug? Bigger than 10mm, the biggest I have.

The diff seems to be losing a fair bit of oil as well. I need to clean it all up, change the oil and see where the leak is coming from. I think it is coming out of the front of the diff, near where the propshaft connects.

Comments? :?:

I just checked the CD's, it appears the drive is 1/2" or 14mm, does this seem right?

The manual also shows a seal at the front of the diff, I'm guessing this has sprung a leak, is this common?

Best,

Jim

What size spanner???

Have a look in the tool kit for your TL1000. You may be able to use the outside of one of the tube spanners to fit in the hex socket on the diff. Be careful though, motorcycle spanners are notorious for having a strength rating 1 point up the scale from cheddar cheese.
Hope this helps

I think that 14mm is the standard for MB drin plugs. You can get the keys from most motor-factors, but don't try without the correct one, since the plug will probably be stuck very hard and if you damage it with the wrong tools, you'll never get it off.

yes Jim, the front seal on the diff does fail, it's not uncommon and it's not a huge job.

That's the good news, the bad news is that it's not a DIY job as the diff needs to be preloaded - ours is leaking very slightly and the local dealer quoted us approx £200 for the job - his words were - leave it till it gets a bit worse but keep an eye on the oil level - then get it booked in when you are having to refill regularly.

Cheers Andy, I checked the CD and there appears to be some sort of cage that the diff fits into, I guess that would be the "preloading" operation. Oh well, at least I know it is not a DIY job, I'll ask the dealer to quote. Many thanks to you all for your advice.

Best,

Jim
