Whats the typical oil consumption rate of this motor?

I did the oil change about 2000 miles ago, and just poured about 1/2 - 3/4 of a litre in as the engine was just starting to sound slightly clattery (only very faintly). The dipstick showed the level at precisely halfway between the markers.

That much difference in oil level would not make a clattering sound, it is either your imagination/coincidence or you have an unrelated problem

I've just changed the oil in my W210 E300TD. There was no noticable consumption during the 10k miles that I've had the car. Oil level was at the max when I changed and I've never put any in.

I would imagine the difference between min and max on the dipstick is about 2 litres. I would keep a watchful eye on things as it sounds like oil consumption is a bit on the heavy side.

Perhaps you do a lot of high speed motoring in which case this may explain the high consumption to a degree. If not get compression and valve guides/seals checked.

Well the car has been up and down the motorway all its life, indeed I just did 300 miles on Monday at around 85mph.

Mileage is 165k, so I'll keep my eye on it.

You are better keeping it between the min and max, too much oil is just as bad as to little oil.
