Its under the rear offside just in front of rear wheel, you will have two pumps and the in line filter is part of this assembly, make sure that you fit it with the arrow going in direction of fuel flow. you will have to clamp the pipes or have a very low tank and jack the car.

um, I think he meant the oil filter Malcolm 
1984 280E would be a 123 with 110 engine I think- the oil filter is hiding on this engine- under the right-hand side (looking from the front), silver canister which has a bolt running through the middle then comes off with a paper element.
