What is the size of oil filter socket i need for my E280 CDi, 2006?
Can anyone help? I bought one today from Halfords, which is 76 mm 14 flats, but it is too small. On the packet it does say it will fit my car, but it's no good. any help appreciated.
Thanks

OK, I just called them and they told me they were not allowed to sell tools to the public!
So, no joy there then. I will keep on looking.

Get one from eBay, I did.

Just measure the diameter of your cap accross from flat to flat, then count the flats. This will give you your dimessions you need, eg. I needed 74mm/14 This assumes you have an even number of flats - I'm not sure how to measure it if they are odd.

Then search the bay (worldwide) for something like "oil Filter Cap Wrench Socket Cup Tool" or click here...
http://motors.search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?sofocus=bs&sbrftog=1&catref=C6&from=R40&dfsp=32&satitle=oil+Filter+Cap+Wrench+Socket+Cup+Tool&sacat=6000%26catref%3DC6&fmmk=&fmmd=&fylo=&fyhi=&mppfqy=oil+Filter+Cap+Wrench+Socket+Cup+Tool&sargn=-1%26saslc%3D2&sadis=200&sabfmts=1&fobfmt=1&saobfmts=insif&ftrt=1&ftrv=1&saprclo=&saprchi=&fsop=32%26fsoo%3D2&coaction=compare&copagenum=1&coentrypage=search

Then check further within the listings for the correct dimension you need. They will all say for Mercedes, BMW etc etc, but there are so many different sizes for each manufacturer anyway.

I got mine from the US (to Australia) within a few days and it was quite cheap. I combined postage with a couple of other special tools that the main dealer here refuses to sell, such as the transmission dipstick.

Thanks for your reply, but if you read my first post you will see that that is what I bought originally. My oil filter housing is about 4 inches in diameter. The later V6 engines have a much larger oil filter housing.
Thanks anyway. SWS
