Oil Filter ????

Please can someone tell me where I'd find the oil filter on my 1996 C280, I'm used to servicing (basic oil and filter changes) my previous cars but they've always had an oil filter underneath this is my first Mercedes and I'm puzzled.

I don't know where it is on the 280 engine, but usually it's beneath a black plastic screw-on cap, towards the top of the engine. It looks like you could undo it by hand, but you'll need a tool (£5 from a motorfactor). The filter element inside is the only bit you change, and it's easy and mess-free.

Cheers, I've found it, it's at the rear of the engine bay just off to the right (rear of the engine), a black top with 25nM written on it, I'll pick up a cup wrench, I think that's what it's called, and change the oil and filter.

Incidentally for an oil and filter change at my local MB dealer....£245.00 yep that's £245.00, mind you that does include, or should I say rip you off, for a "safety check" so they probably bolt on £100 to cover labour for the safety check while some spotty oik stands around kicking the tyres....duh yep they're black and round alright...

I was quoted £300 for a service that amounted to oil, plugs and pollen filter - as my car is 9 years old, has just 4 cylinders and 118K on the clock, this didn't make a lot of sense. I did a much more comprehensive service myself using genuine parts for £70, and I'll easily recoup any reduced resale value.

Yes they are taking the ****. Lots of wealthy people buying mercs and not really fussed about a 500-1000 pound service once or twice a year.
