I have my car booked in for it's first service later this month & they're going to charge me £127 for 8.5 litres of fully synthetic engine oil.
I'm going to supply my own hopefully for quite a bit less than that.
Anyone got any recommendations please?

On my c320cdi i have used castrol edge 5w-30 as it complied with MB229.51 specifically for cars with DPF due to its low ash content. If you visit castol web site you can insert registration and get recommendation. Dealers tend to use Mobil 1 and i have noticed that they now stock low ash version.

I supply castrol magnatec for both diesel and petrol, prices tend to be up and down but for 8 litres its £50-60 or Mobil 1 for about £100

All the Castrol site says under recommended is 'Refer to Technical'.

If you are near Costco, 4 litres of Mobil 1 is £23 meets MB 229.3 & 229.5

Read on an American site that all MB diesels 2007 > should use 229.51.
Looks like Mobil 1 ESP 5W30.
9 Litres at Halfords is £98.

You only need 229.51 if you have a particulate filter which is not standard fitment in the UK, if you do not have one 229.5 is fine, so £23 from Costco for 4 litres.

MB Colchester supplies (and recommends) Shell Ultra Helix 5W-30/40 for all diesel and petrol engines.

At least this what I had/have in the C320 Cdi, wife's A180 Cdi and my E55.

Lift up the engine cover & next to the oil filler is a label with the spec.
Seems I have a particle filter.
Anyway the 20 odd quid I'll save is better buying me beer than lining MB's pockets!
Thanks for all the replies.

Fair enough

BUT.... oil is seriously important in a diesel (or turbo charged engine for that matter).

Like tyres, never skimp on this.

I couldn't agree more.
Mobil 1 ESP 5W30 corresponds to MB spec 229.51.
Actually when I checked it out yesterday Halfords had a 10% reduction for buying online, but not today.
Think I'll get some from here: http://www.lubricants.org/

PS I'm not really a tight b*st*rd but I'm off work for a few weeks & have been getting bored.Honest.
