Hello all, forgive me now, I'm generally capable with oil types and understand the grading system. But... I'm confused with the new car! I have an E estate with the OM654 Diesel. A great car BTW - I love it (but I also held onto the faithful E500 for summers)! The owners handbook is very non-committal on oil type, as is Mercedes BEVO! I'm on the MB service plan for this new to me car, it was easier to sort out. I'm reading that the OM654 was designed primarily for economy, so uses 0w20 oil. My my that is almost WATER! It's more for between service top ups such as now. Any advice as always gratefully received! I've got plenty of Fuchs 5w40 as I use that in the 500 but 5w40 would be like filling the OM654 with tar would it not, though sure it would be OK as a top up? MB do like to cause doubt and confusion!

Thanks Malcolm, good old 5w30 that'll do nicely! I'll use that in the 500 next service then as well (which I do myself now as I kept it) so I'll only need to keep one type 'in stores'! Yes, the new W213 is huge, dog loves it + it has the wide-screen dash which took some getting used to, but looks the bees knees at night. Economy is astounding, but then I'm also comparing that to the 500 :D

They are great cars my son has the saloon W213 220d, the suspension is far superior to the W211/W212 now that MB have moved away from McPherson strut design and as good as the W210 for handling. My advice would be to change the oil on the OM654 <7500 miles and turn the start/stop off every journey and hopefully you will have a reliable, frugal car for the long term

Yes I'm with you on the oil change interval. I'll do nowhere near that mileage annually so being on the MB plan, which I wasn't with the 207, I'll just take it in when MB tell me to! I dislike the stop start immensely! I know it's a mixed bag with us forum MB owners but it seems to air on the side of most not liking it very much. We'll all need a new starter motor sooner rather than later, and the natural resource which went into making said starter, well, will it make up for what I save in Co2 and fuel? I guess the Jury's out on that  ! Call me a sceptic! The saloon version is a very handsome car, I would have opted for one but my elderly Labrador may have protested! The estates boot is nice and low and with the new dog ramp, its a winner all round I reckon. Plus the odd tip run and pick up of new fence panels - couldn't do that in the 207! Even looked at 'other' estates, but really only to pass them by as in reality was I gonna get another brand? Nope! I think we all love our marque and really are spoilt, makes replacing an MB very, very difficult once you've had one (or several as lots in this club have)!!
