Car has been into the mechanics today for a new shock and to check an oil leak.
He has said it is the head gasket oil leak.I'm no mechanic so does that sound like a common fault. He alos said it is not worth doing as its such an expensive and time consuming job. £5-600 ?

Just keep an eye on the level but it will lose minimal oil. The most annoying thing is the small oil spots on the drive.

The car is a 1997 P reg E230 estate Auto. Just bought it so not sure what w it is as I am not up to speed on all the Merc talk yet !

Cheers
Stu

If the leak is at the front it is a timing cover off and not the head gasket,,where is it leaking from

As earlier if it is leaking from the front timing cover, this can be removed on its own, and re sealed, OK the crankshaft damper has to come off, but not a head off job
