Yesterday after a 35 mile or so run I decided to check the oil level and after the usual waiting time the read out said add 2 litres. I've only done about 1500 miles since the last service. Should I look for any other signs? Engine bay and garage floor are both clean and dry and the cars not smoking other that when driven hard throught the gears. Any sugestions from the techies?

These things are known for giving false readings, and I would have thought that a warning "add oil" would have come up if this was the case. do check again a few times over the next few days, both when hot and cold to see what it says

Sometimes when the oil service is done it is noticeable that the dipstick (if you have one) will read out a full reading once the required amount of oil is poured into the motor. After a short run and a second subsequent reading, the oil level will register less than full.
This is an idiosyncracy of some motors filling the oil filter canister with the new engine oil and indicating a lower level in the oil supply. The operation of the motor sucks the oil into the oil filter
