Hi, I have a 2003 w211 e320cdi, I've just got my car back from the garage, I had the turbo reconditioned and there is now oil dripping out of the exhaust, is this a result of the turbo going before the recon and this just needs to clear, or is it a case of the turbo not being put back in right, or something different that caused the turbo to go in the 1st place?

There is a lot of oil...

That is hard to say, it could be oil in the intercooler and exhaust being cycled out, but to be sure, I would have them pick it up on a low loader. I wouldn't drive it. Either its pumping oil out the turbo, which the way you describe, could end up running the oil too low, or you risk the oil being sucked up into the air intake via the turbo and it running on its own oil until it blows up.

as above , do not drive it any further , I get the feeling the turbo must really have blown badly and passed a lot of oil into the exhaust , cant say ive seen it before on any car let alone a merc but it doesn't sound good at all

Just done an Audi A5 turbo replacement, removed the exhaust system
and steam cleaned it through after draining nearly 2 litres of oil out of it.

Not that common but have had it before on a TT and Insignia.

Sorry I haven't responded, I didn't get any notifications that I had any replies to my post.

Ok I've discovered if I remove the engine breather pipe ( small plastic pipe coming from front of engine to air intake pipe to the turbo) no oil comes from the exhaust the moment I reconnect it oil drips from the exhaust, does anyone know what would cause the turbo to suck oil from the engine breather pipe.

Do not run the engine. If there is that much oil there is a serious risk of diesel runaway where the engine runs on the oil in the inlet. If that happens you will almost certainly destroy the engine.

The pipe you disconnected from your turbo air intake pipe is part of the crank case re-breather system, this union allows crank-case pressure or cylinder “blow by” gases to be mixed in with the intake air stream before it enters the turbo, some oil may enter the turbocharger from the re-breather system, however if there is a lot as your describing it may be that your oil separator is not working correctly.
As stated above, to have oil visible in your exhaust pipe is very bad and often indicates that your turbo is shot, if you continue to drive it as it is, the engine may start to run on its own oil, which usually ends in catastrophic engine failure..

Are we to presume that your car is an automatic?
If it's a manual, you have more control over the stopping of the engine in an emergency.

Take it back go the garage!?

Unless it was leaking oil out the exhaust before you replaced the turbo?

What symptoms did it have to be booked into the garage in the first place?

Hang on...................... I retract my second post regarding turbo seals have gone,
I just realized that I posted that the exhaust is probably full of oil.
