Looking back over the service records fir my 215 , 4 different oil specs have been used 0w30 ,0w40,5w30and 10w40 , the very first service was 10w40 at an MB dealer sooooo can i use any of the above , with 130k on the clock im leaning towards 10w40 and as it wont be a daily , this will offer more appropriate protection, no ?

As long as it's MB229.5 it will be fine.
Personally I'd go 0w40. Thinner at low temps so get everywhere quicker and holds viscosity when warm.
I'm not sure 10w40 is 229.5 approved...

Ok so why would an MB main dealer use 10w40 pal , it was around the 15k miles mark , ive never used 0w anything, i dont think our climate requires it ?

Full list of 229.5 approved oils here and as I thought 10w40 is not 229.5 approved.
That car may also have 229.3 spec permitted (earlier spec) which does allow 10w40 but I would always use the latest approved spec for the vehicle.

have only ever used mobil 1 0w40, even since I had my w124. Whenever i change the oil and look down the filler hole (oil cap), I am just amazed how clean it all is.

Truth is you don't even need approved oils...

10W40 will be a semi synthetic , handbooks get frozen in time whilst higher quality synthetics become widely available at a later date .

^ That is the grade MBS used in my last service for my E55.
Cole reckoned that is the viscosity recommended for higher mileage cars.
As above , as long as the oil meets 229.5 spec.
