Oil recommendation (for 190D 2.5)?

Hi, just measured the oil level and its dead halfway between 'max' and 'min' so will top up a bit. The engine's done 181,000 miles and runs fine. Any recommendations for oil brands to pick off the Halfords shelf? Former owner used an MB dealer for servicing and they always used Mobil Synth S 5W40 in it. Any reason to change? Happy to spend top £ for quality.

If it has been run on synth then I would keep it that way. As it is halfway between min and max leave it alone. By definition halway between min & max is the correct amount.

Thanks, will bear in mind. I'll top it up slightly, just to be safe. I've had a look at the Halfords website and all the oil brands they sell seem to be Castrol. Will wait till I pass an Esso/Mobil station, but does seem a bit odd you can't seemingly buy elsewhere? Maybe a Benz garage, but with a mark-up probably...

I saw Mobil 1 in Halfords today at £38 for 4 ltrs.

My local 'Hellfrauds' also keeps it. I'd check at your local branch..
