I've recenty bought a r129 with cream (helios) interior. it seems from looking around there is very few of this colour interior around and thus not many spares. As you can imagine in a 25 year old car with cream interior, that had a few owners, there are black marks on the carpets. Any tips on getting these clean? i was thinking of removing the carpets out the car (i know seats will have to come out) and steam cleaning them? Any ideas of solvents to use? Black interiors hide many stains, cream interiors hide zero!

Use any proprietary carpet cleaner (just test a bit first) - I really recommend the Autoglym car interior shampoo it brought off some really bad black marks from my house carpets when I changed a radiator

He obviously meant he removed the radiator then took it in his house to clean !!!!!!!!

I agree with the above regarding cleaning carpets, if you can remove them, so much the better as will dry quicker, and you can clean all the other bits as well, just put a few days aside. Soft scrubbing brush soap and warm water removes quite a lot of dirt and grime from car door panels and other plastic parts.

I used Rug Doctor to clean the carpet & seats of my Dad's car. Sprayed a solution on, left it to soak, rotary brush to agitate & then used a wet vac to remove it. Came up great. And the stuff is cheap.

Depends if you have the time and the tools/chemicals.

My cars are usually spotless inside and out, bar the staining on the carpets of my alpaca gray interior W220 - damn kids and muddy shoes and whatever else.

I searched on tinterweb and found a mobile valeter local to me with very good reviews. I asked him to do the carpets only, he went over them 3 times for the price of 35 pounds and there is not a sigle mark on them. It took him about 45 mins.

Kids only enter the car with socks now.

Swarfega type stuff is normally a good start.

As always test on a hidden part.

I have managed pretty well with clean white rag and cellulose paint thinner gets near all out. But find somewhere out of site to try it!!!! , I not familiar with effects on carpets newer than 2003.and not needed to test idea on ml
