Hi guys, I new here!. I owned '98 E240 just over 2 years now. It is an excellent car. Crank shaft pulley broke a month ago...replaced it together with belt. However a few days ago found oil on parking area. Brought it to SC and they told me the upper oil sump seal leak (due to damage during pulley broke down) and inorder to replace it MUST take the engine out!

I am worried to take off the engine. I heard it is possible the crank shaft pulley oil seal may leak as well. My q is ...how can I check if O ring is leaking? and is it true the engine must take off to repalce the seal? Thanks guys.

Did you actually replace the pulley yourself ??????

Who are SC ???????????

Are they a Mercedes specialist ?????????

If Merc specialist, they should know what they are talking about, but I am surprised that would be the case.

If you are familiar with the Russian site, go see which seal they are on about and let us know.

To check it:-

clean the engine around the front pulley and sump, use gunk and pressure wash it clean.

scatter talc over the area of interest and any oil will show up as staining where the leak is.

You may have to take the engine part way out to get the sump/oil pan off.

No, I did not replace the pulley myself. I send it to SC (Service Centre) but since it broke in the middle of my journey, and it is sunday I just drove in any SC nearby. That a little distance...the pulley already touching the engine block. But after I found the leak, drove it to Merc SC, they are the one told me that it leak at oil sump area and need to take the engine out.

Anyway wireman, I try to do what u suggest.

Thanks boths of u.

If it is the sump to engine seal thats leaking you may try putting some silicone sealer over the joint along the seam, it is a bit of a bodge but if it stops the leak and keeps your drive way clean it is better than leaving it due to the trouble involved in doing a proper repair. The fish tank compatible sealant sticks to metals better than the kitchen/batroom type in the longer term. The surfaces must be totaly oil free to get the stuff to stick.
