I used a 10 40 semi synthetic either from Euro car parts or the VW oil, called quantum or something like that.
I ran the car for 203,000 miles before selling to a family member and the car is up to 210,000 now. Inspection of internals (thro filler cap and engine block when changing filter) showed clean metal without any varnish deposits.
Car is still performing as it was from day one (now wish I kept it) uses about a pint between services (10k).
