So not directly related to a MB, but this is about the OM642 in Jeep's.
Over a year ago I over heated a OM642 due to the radiator get clogged up with muddy water, remember this is a jeep. This was to the point it was shuddering. I remember at the time it got very hot on the top end and coolant was at about 120c for a while. Further to this the turbo gave up the ghost to the point where the turbine bearings were toast to and end float was enough to move the Titanic.
Anyway I've spent the last year striping it down as it had the oil cooler leak for ages, so new seals, turbo swirl flaps removed etc.
This weekend I finally got it all back together, I did not drop the oil just yet as the plan was to run it up to temp, then flush and replace.
This did not quite go to plan, after sorting all the niggles, intake temp sensor and swirl flap bypass it was running like new. Had it nice warmed up 5k drive, system burped, oil level ok, it was building boost etc, which all seemed fine Back at the garage I revved a few times and shut it down.
Opened the doors etc made a cuppa and went back to move it on the ramp.. At this point it didn't start right, kinda over run on the start up, so gave it a few revs and it seemed fine, went to move it on to the ramp as it built boost there was a almighty bang and what seemed like a jam in the engine and it shut down.
After this on turnover some nice metallic sounds and what sounded like no compression. The engine was not seized. Man handled it onto the ramp shut the door and went home to drink beer.
Next day was a fresh pair of eyes stripped of the cam covers to find all the cam followers blown to **** needle bearings everywhere etc.
Now while I understand these things happen, can anyone possibly point to a route cause, is this oil starvation, crap oil, did I miss something, I can only assume it jumped the timing chain, but these are all tight and no noise from the tensioners which are operating freely.
Just a bit deflated and at that point where do I strip down or purchase a reman block and move the ancillaries over.
