Just went and checked mine , I couldn’t resist it . It looks the same as yours , I can see the threaded section but I can’t seen any oil hole in the smooth section next to it .
I’m at just over 104k

I want keep you still alert, hole is sometimes just 90 degree turned so you can't see it

Shaft lenght tells something, if you compare them to pictures where hole is visible...

Could you provide a video or sound clip it will give more of an idea of what’s going on.

Did you only hear it after you had changed the oil? Did it do it again the next time you started it?

Thanks everyone. I've decided the noise is probably the starter or something else that I'm not worried about!! I think it's unlikely to be the chain having studied the information given here. Thanks for your help again.

Hey Matthew. My ML350 has just started making that plastic popping noise during the startup and wondered if you got to the bottom of it. Took engine cover off and it’s exaggerated. Had the chain done last year plus it’s a completely different noise. Please get in touch if you have any info.

Further info… I know I’ve got the oils cooler seals leak. Not too bad atm but I know I’m gonna have to fix it in the next few months. Can’t see how it relates to this particular noise though…
