Hi All,
2007 W211 E320 CDI Avantgarde 71k Some timing chain rattle - I have read that these chains may stretch but rarely fail- should I rely on this and have only the tensioner(s) replaced ? Or should I because of the age replace the lot ? Recommend anything else to replace at the same time eg. guide rails/seals/pump ? All advice welcome together with part nos. if known
Many thanksS

Empty garage, awaiting new toy :)
I don't believe at 71k that engine should have a timing chain problem.

I asked one of the well known Indie Specialist based in Harrow about changing timing chain as mine has done almost 130 but his response was "you don't need timing chain replaced on these cars".

if oil lubrication hole is shown in tensioner actuator shaft when peeking in oil filler tube, chain is stretched... I have posted some pics on forum and google search will give some more I bet...

c180 1998 1.8 faithful friend but now retired- e200 w210 2000 avant garde
I would change the chain and the tensioner now
My chain stretched and I ended up with bent valves now going thro repairs-€1000 +.
The chain may rarly fail and actually break but a stretched chain can jump teeth on the sprockets and do the same damage with no warning.
Just my 2cents

So this chain is strong and if anything, it will be knackered tensioner or guides. Both oil. If tensioner leaks, oil pressure is dropped I a believe and causes alot more damage. Then also chain being slack hitting inside of casing at parts. Making noise, also cause loss of oil. One area I have seen is at crack case seal.

Had a e280 cdi for 8 years, when I sold it in August 2019, it had 125k on the clock, never had any issues with chain, it was also serviced at the well known indie specialist in harrow.

It is not usually causing any issues. Sometimes symptoms are rattle on start, roughy sound etc. Timing can be off few degrees (there are pic on net old and new chain lengths), which is effecting slightly somewhere on performance, but barely noticeable. Couple of chain change reports says that tensioner has been almost on its limit, it has been falling in parts when removing. I think that is only damage scenario with OM642, chain won't snap.

My both OM642s had clear stretch (200-300k on the clock) when checking the tensioner.
