The A service due in 25 days message popped up the other day on my CLK220 CDI and l want to change the engine oil and filter myself, as l have always done before. However I've never worked on this engine before and one little thing bothers me. I've read about damage being caused to a fuel supply plastic junction / pipe. Surely with reasonable care this can be avoided? I presume it's merely a matter of pulling off the plastic engine cover, sucking out the oil using my Pela and replacing the oil filter using my proper 14 sided filter tool. Can anyone please reassure me. Thanks in advance.

No more complicated than you describe.
Good to wear disposable gloves.
Your Pela can take 6 litres, the oil within can be 6.5 litres, if it 'aint burnt any off.
Put some cloths / paper towel around the filter cap to catch the oil that will drip.
Have a container handy to drop the filter into to contain the oil still on it.

Only the Vito left! W639/1 OM646
Sounds like you've got better tools for the job than me (13mm spanner for sump plug and strap wrench for filter housing) and it's as simple as it can be.
I don't know what the fuel supply plastic junction issue would be any more than not bashing or breaking anything whilst doing it.
I've had the OM646 in my W203 and also in my W639 and no problems with anything getting in the way.

The fragile fuel lines were on earlier 646's, in fact I think the similar engine was then a 610? Edit - 611.
These transparent lines with 'o' rings were superseded during 2006. Your 2007 shouldn't be at risk.
But in any case don't 'it out that's 'angin out and you'll be alright.

Job's a doddle, waiting for the Pela to suck and pumping again, and again is the only frustration.

Make sure the oil is hot for the Pela
Make sure with the oil filter , when you remove the cap , note where the o ring is seated . It’s easy to put it back wrong . There is a torque setting on the cap top on both of mine .
Refill the oil with half Litre less than you removed

Refill the oil so its correct on the dipstick. If it was 1/2 litre too low initially you will be running low. Otherwise Wighty aint far off.

No dipstick on mine. I'm going to have to rely on the dash display or else buy one.

Yes I think I'll invest in one. I don't do ebay so I'll get my mate to sort it

Personally, I only ever refill 6 ltrs, and this allows some leeway if you have not managed to remove the full 6.5 ltrs. And if you have drained it while it's hot, that's quite a possibility, as all of the oil may not have had time to return to the sump. After filling the 6 ltrs, I run the engine to check for leaks, then let it sit overnight ( or at least a few hours) then check it again and top up if needed. Again personally, I'm quite happy when the level shows slightly lower than the maximum. To my way of thinking, a little more as in this case is more harmful than a little less.

3/4 mark is the ideal fill level for me.
When I am doing services on cars, I start the oil drain first, then have a cuppa, then do all the other jobs, air filters, cabin filters, wipers, washer fluid etc etc. By the time thats all done its had a good hour a6t least to drain.

Yes, thats the way I work too now that I'm retired, but when I was working in the garage ( main dealers) it was a case of car up on the lift, drain oil, remove/replace filter, replace drain stud, drop car, refill, run and test for leaks and NEXT. ( this was for a simple oil / filter change)

Surely the OP is not such a dipstick.
Strange as it may seem, that very question has been asked several times....as in " Which dipstick is for the engine oil, I can see two of them??? " For some one with out much mechanical experience, it can be a puzzle, especially in modern engine lay out. Going back a few years it was very different.....and much easier, especially for the average car owner whose only technical skills were the once weekly oil and water check. :)

I like the electric oil extraction pump.
Did over 6.5 LTRs on mine in under 8 mins. (Oil was warm) I extracted it straight into empty 2ltr bottles so no mess. Got mine from Lidl

Its very important to monitor how much is extracted...but even when I get the 6.5 ltrs out, I'll only refill 6 ltrs. Easy to top up afterwards. And also, the oil level can increase...frequent failed regens will cause the oil level to rise. So if you extract 6.5 ltrs, and put the same amount back in, then a day or so later, you find that its reading above the max on the dipstick. Means that there was more than the 6.5 ltrs in it to begin with. That's why it's important to only fill 6ltrs,until you are sure about the level.
