Hey all,
Our aged S320 Cdi OM648 appears to have a leak from the Oil cooler. It looks like the seal has pushed out also? Its dripping a fair amount when running, so it needs sorting asap.

There is plenty out there on the OM642 V6, but little on the OM648. So my questions are:

Has anyone done this themselves and is it straightforward? I am assuming the inlet manifold needs to come off, but are there any comparable 'difficult' sticking points?

Should we change the whole cooler or just the seal?

Anything else to rectify whilst 'in' there?

Thanks

You could try a search here on the forum, I'd be surprised if some one has not had the same problem, but if you can't find anything, I'm also sure that some one will be along to help out.

yes you are definitely right about info on the 648, its very scarce. Which paradoxically might be attributed to the fact that these engines are bullet proof? I don't have any experience with them ( so far anyway ) but I'm sure that some members will have. Sorry about that !!!.

Ok, I have done some searching... google word for word... oil cooler replacement MB 648 engine and using those searcg terms, I've come across some interesting leads on your problem, Check it out and let us know how you get on. Yours is the straight inline 6 cylinder engine? The other one, "V" configuration involves a major strip down, as the cooler is deep in the bottom of the V. Good Luck

I'm assuming it is quite straight forward, I am more concerned about any issues we may face when removing the inlet manifold and aux components to reach it. Ie. Single use o-rings or things along that line.

I wouldnt say the OM648 is bullet proof - our original cylinder head cracked between the ports, breaching the water jacket.

We sourced a replacement head, refurbished professionally, but we saw several heads starting to crack in the same place when hunting for our replacement.

Any engine that has a tendency to crack cylinder heads has a serious problem. There was some VAG 2.0 ltr engines which which had a litany of serious faults, but they had specific engine nrs, other VAG engines were very good high mileage ones. Just goes to show. But there's plenty of members here who have done mega trouble free miles in their MBs,
