I have two videos of the sound of my engine, it has a cold start rattle and a constant rattle even on increased rpm

Is this the chain? Or vacuum pump? Or something else? Any experienced ears know what’s up?

Sounds like the chain to me, the hissing is normal as far as I can tell, I have the same engine. Although I have heard worse chain rattles

In general the engine is really quiet, especially compared to my older w203 c220 on 160k miles, my older car was loud but it was smooth.

I have ordered a chain tensioner, I believe that’s the weak point. I hope the chain is ok, I will spend the money if I have to but I would like to get it smooth. Car has done 130k miles.

The key is regularly changing the oil. I'm probably doing 5k miles between changes.

Just checked the timing chain using the technique in this video

The chain is definitely stretched! With the bottom pulley on OT, the intake cam is out and the exhaust cam is out by about 5 or 6mm, it was hard to tell how much the intake cam was out. Going to shop around tomorrow to get the full job done.

I’ve been advised by a mechanic not to drive it, but able to get the job done at the weekend, could I get away with doing a couple of short trips before it’s done?

I have the same sound. It only appears during warm start. By resting the engine for 15 to 20 minutes then starting the engine again produces this sound. Did any one located problem?

Tensioner 1st, f all 2 loose if still there it's chain and guides as well chain I understand is eng in feasible, guide is motor out job, guides f up when chain left clattering 4 to long. Even more hassle 4 me as some pxick put motor in wrong way around!!!

That is very, very likely chain. Do not drive any further. If the guides are ok it can be done with the engine in situ, otherwise it is an engine out job.
I have found that changing the tensioner is a waste of time. You can try it though, as you will be ordering a new one with the chain kit.

Just noticed that you said "warm start" typical timing chain wear is on first start up in the morning from cold.

Hi. Actually, the first start in the morning is completely normal, in multiple observation I have noticed no weird starting sound.

The starng sound is only when the warm engine is started again after 15 to 20 minutes.
