Seems Mercedes have not resolved their recent M271 timing chain issues with the new oM651 engine.

This is with the tensioner still in. Note the pile of chain on the right side of the picture.

Yes we have seen several at 70-90k that rattle so bad after draining the oil and a filter change, I was praying it wasn't going to jump a tooth or so. :(

I'm still waiting for the tool from Mercedes hat determines what parts require replacing depending on the streatch.

Few broken teeth there too, they going to be a pain to fetch out of the sump.

Is this an engine-out job or does it depend on the damage? Looks like our next C could be a petrol...but then that's a 271, isn't it?

Problem with the OM651 is the timing gear is at the rear of the engine, so if extensive work is required its an engine out job I think. The OM651 in various states of tune is almost ubiquitous across the Mercedes range from the A class to the CLS/ ML. Lets hope there's an insitu fix or modification [ duplex chain??] in the pipe line.

ps if its any consolation BMW had similar problems on their recent 4 cylinder diesels fitted from Mini to 5 series --- its all to do with shorter/shallower engine blocks to afford more air space under the bonnet for pedestrian collision safety I am led to believe.

educate pedestrians to LOOK for cars before crossing roads etc and that the PAVEMENT is for pedestrians, the roads are for CARS

after all, i dont see many 'pedestrian friendly' shaped buses, HGV's etc

MB changed the chain they used on the 271 because it used to stretch.

Now they have the chain problem sorted - they obviously did bugger all about the sprocket quality.

With all the crap they had with the 272 engines you think they would have sorted this crap out.

But……….. it keeps us indies busy

You'd think they would have learnt from the 102 engine........... wait the DID and then fitted a duplex chain to later 102 engines. Perhaps the young deigners/engineers of today can't remember that far back.

Not looking good for the 651 engine, we had 2 cars delivered by recovery truck last week, both new to us and both 10 plates, one had a loose timing chain tensioner and lost its oil and threw a rod (only ever been serviced at merc). The other which also had been serviced at mb and to be fair they did report a noisy chain has now got a snapped chain.

The one with the loose tensioner and thrown a rod has 70,000m and the other 110,000m. Both main dealer serviced and maintained, not seen either car before.

I expect we will start to see alot more of them with similar problems, we have ordered all the special tools for the job.

Do not these lengthy jobs upset the normal running of a workshop, 2 or 3 of them at the same time must upset the normal flow of work.

Yes it can but we tend to set aside one man to do these type of jobs. We sent the 50k mile car to mb as it was only just out of warranty and had only been worked on by them, £320 +vat later, no goodwill. :( so it's going to be back with us.

I'm amazed MB have any customers left.

But it's great news for the indies - you're going to be very busy for years to come with these continuing problems MB repeatedly wash their hands of.

I was thinking of a new career anyway - I think I now know what to go and do!

We would rather not being carrying out these sort of repairs, its too time consuming and I'm sure some customers think it down to us for the design and poor materials used. :(

I feel for the customer who has the short end of the deal.
