Can the OM651 chain tensioners be re-used?

To be clear, I don't want to re-use it is in the event that the replacement one does not fit and I cannot source another one locally.

If your changing the timing chain, I wouldn't as it'd have unique wear pattern and may prematurely wear out the new chain, but in all cases prime the tensioner first

The answer is yes, as I have just found out. The 651 uses the exclusively hydraulic type, not the type that ratchet out and then lock in position.

Did you have to remove the engine to replace it Minionbob?

No, pretty easy job if you have a manual box; if you have a manual I suspect is also a 100% from the top job.

If you have an auto then the middle bolt holding, of all things, the transmission filler pipe on is a total, utter pig to get to, very awkward. Has to come out to allow the tensioner to be withdrawn.

With an auto box you also have to remove the large, rear undertray to get out a single bolt holding the filler pipe in place. Everything else is from the top.

Put a rag underneath the tensioner to catch the oil that comes out (a few spoonful's).

See attached - its pretty much as described (auto box).

Just curious really as I looked at that area when I had injector problems a while back. Mine has a manual box. I take it timing chain is the one engine has to come out? Is the Viano same as Vito being RWD and engine timing gear tucked against bulkhead? I dont have any issues with mine and hopefully never have:D

Yes, the same. I suspect that, and do recall reading on here that if you remove scuttle panel, chain can be done in situ.

Had the scuttle panel out on mine for injectors and I still never want to have to do the chain that way:D Need hands like a fairy and fairy tools as well LOL. Good to know the tensioner can be done easy enough but if thats ever goosed the chain I suspect Chain wont be far behind:( I have always replaced chain and tensioner together on vehicles if chain is known to stretch. Good info on type of tensioner thats used Minionbob
