First thought - might it be head gasket failure? Any white smoke from the exhaust when accelerating?

Has someone replaced/significantly topped up the MB spec coolant/antifreeze/inhibitor mix with plain old water? Especially the muck delivered in London!:)

With engine cold squeeze the top hose.
Run engine 3-4 minutes.
With engine running squeeze hose again.
If it's rock hard head gasket has failed.

Check carpets in front footwells.
Lack of heat could be an air lock in the heater circuit.
If all else fails get some UV dye and add it to the coolant then shine a UV torch about looking for the tell tale.

UV dye kits are available online for not much money.
