I am not a boy racer but the Callipers were positively scruffy..
Despite the heat yesterday I decided to tackle this job which I have been meaning to do since I got the car.

I didn't photo the process but I have just been out and re removed a wheel to show the finished result.
The process I did was as follows:

1. remove Calliper and hang via a elastic bungee cord.
2. Remove carrier and also pads and anti rattle shims.
3. Use electric drill with a selection of wire brushes to remove dust and crud.. Loads came off (more than I expected actually).
4. A liberal dose of brake cleaner to totally degrease
5. I used hammerite smooth silver paint with a small flat artists paint brush. I left this to go touch dry (less than an hour in this heat) in the vice.. Vice gripping the bolt heads.
6. went out and painted the rear of the callipers first. I carefully twirled them on the bungee cord to paint all surfaces.
7. Went back to carriers to refit anti rattle springs and also treat the Pad tracks to some copper slip grease.
8. Refitted carriers and then the Pads.
9. Refitted Callipers to carriers.. If there are any slight finger marks within the new paint then now is the time to go over with a couple of deft brush strokes.
Certainly a damned sight better than they were...

Looks great Simon.

Have a guess how much red calipers are as an option (U70) on an E63?

For anyone wondering how long the hammerite last, I did mine 12 months ago and 10k miles. If I do them again it will last better, but still so nice and clean looking, how anyone can drive around with rusty disc and calipers I do not know. Yes a slight discolouration but that is all. When I fit my new winter wheels I will do them again, it only takes minutes after the first time.

Very nice Malcolm..
I like the rather nice pads you have there :D:D:D

Your hammerite is the Hammerite "Hammered".. I do like that effect I must admit..

Also I love those easy to clean wheels.. Spot on in my view.

I have to make do with what others throw away at the local tip Simon, if no one brings in the standard hammerite, then I have to make do with what I have ;):D

Looks good so far, but when are you going to finish the job off and do the rears ;)

You are totally correct..
I am plucking up the will to do them...
To be honest I really have to summon up the desire when its hot and humid..
I can handle cold pretty well but not too good with heat..
Might start / finish the rears later today..
If I do I will photo them ! :D

Well done Simon the calipers and hubs look good and finish the car off well.

It makes me smile how manufacturers sometimes do half a job. Why fit alloy wheels which expose calipers and hubs and finish them off so badly that they become eyesores. I'm sure they will cotton on eventually as they did with exhaust exit pipes which nowadays tend to attract the designers eye.

Some areas of car design are still stuck in the 80s, namely caliper and disc manufacture which are contracted out. I was amazed when I ordered pagid discs and they came out of the box prepainted, I'd already got the Hammerite ready so progress is being made slowly. Brembo also prepaint the dics hubs so full marks to them as well.

Progress in the car industry can sometimes be painfully slow.

I had Textar Discs on my previous C270 Cdi and they were very well finished indeed..
After 30,000 miles they still hadn't started to rust..
Thank you Malcolm for your compliments..

Hi Simon
They look superb, like they have been painted at the factory mate. They are so good you have left me considering whether to take my wheels off again and do mine properly!

I wish that I could have taken you out for dinner tonight, but Lilian was not up to it and it would have been too much including tomorrow, did you get the car all done, any difference ??
