Hi,

My 2003 C220 CDI failed a recent NCT (MOT equivalent) for a parking brake imbalance between the two back wheels. Does anyone know how to adjust this balance?
I am presuming there are shoes inside the drums on the back. And hopefully there is some kind of an adjusting nut that can be adjusted either through the front of the drum or by removing the drum to access. Just looking for some guidance before i go at it.

Thanks,

Michael.

OK back off the adjuster accessed through the panel under the rear seat, then you need to remove each rear wheel. via the large hole in the face of the drum you need to flip round each adjuster so that the drum will not turn and back off about 6 clicks so that it turns with very little binding noise. do both sides with the adjuster as in the photo, they are always at the top just offset to tad. do lubricate the joint on the rear of the drum back plate with oil, do the same with all the moving parts on the equalizer and adjust the cable for about 6 clicks on the pedal

This is the cable and fittings layout

You may have one rusted and seized up brake shoe expander, unfortunately this is a brake disk/drum& shoes off job to get at it and it can be an awkward and fiddly task to do.
The expanders don't appear on Malcolm's drawing but they attach to the ends of the two cables in the bottom of the pair of shoes.
Note that both wheel adjusters are right hand threaded and one goes up to tighten while the other goes down - this can be confusing.
