Hi,

I have a E240 Avantgarde that doesn't have parking sensors has anyone ever fitted aftermarket sensors (flush type), how easy are they to fit and where did you get them from?

Thanks in advance.

People do fit them, to fit them flush and loose all of the wires is a massive job. MB take £800 labour, Volvo take the same. You could have your bumper resprayed 8 times for that

Hi i've fitted a set of reversing sensors to a Range Rover. It's really simple

You can get the entire kit aftermarket will cost you from £19.99 to however much you want to pay.

All you need to do is drill a few holes in the front/rear bumper set the sensors in these holes (all instructions are there)

Wire them in following the instructions and hey presto

It took me 4 hrs(but I'm in a wheelchair) so will take you around an hour or two.

I,m about to undertake the job on my old bus as I have the rear bumper off for stopping the chrome corrosion. Only spent a few quid for a set on e-bay so nothing special, but reversing not being my best skill, I decided to get a set.
May be awkward given the shape of the bumper but we will see - nothing ventured nothing bodged as they say!!

The big problem on most MB's is to get the bunch of wires (4 sensors = 8 wires) through the bulk head and on to the dash, the rear ones are just as hard, to get the wires through to the front, in all a lot of dismantling.
When you have drilled the hole in the bumper it leaves a sharp edge, liable to chip or flake. It depends on the car. It could be that I am too fussy and anything short of a factory appearance I could not live with, we are all different thank goodness. I have had a set for three years for front and rear.they are still in the box.

I bought the kit from the local car parts people (not Halfords) The ones I bought were really cheap £30 or so, sorry don't have the box. Go to the local car parts store and see what ones they have (Ignore the dribble that they give you because they want you to buy the super expensive set and most importantly avoid Self Adhesive sensors.

wiring them up was really simple wired into the spare fuse box and earthing them out. To make them function you can either wire them to the reversing switch or simply onto the reverse light (Make sure it's not a multi system ie brake/reverse or it will beep everytime you brake)

These are a great kit and really easy to fit. although £70.

I'll let you know how i get on.
I only have a reversing kit and not a front set or duel set. Cost probably £20 on e-bay imported from China from memory. Even comes with its own hole borer for the four sensors.

I see two rubber grommets already in my rear bulkhead and so yes its just a case of routing four sensor leads via the bulkhead and along to the gubbins box which fits into the boot probably on a sticky pad behind the sidewing lining and then wiring to the reversing light. From the Gubbins box a wire runs to the the small display box you place on the rear parcel shelf or roof lining or whereever you want it.

The wire goes up and around the rear wheel arch area to where you want to set the display. Same route basically as where your wiring for CD Player routes to the Aeriel.

Hope to get it done this weekend.

Many moons ago I tried to put photos of my S/S downpipes and mods for an SEC onto the forum but I could not get them to load. Seemed a most complicated business, but I will try again if job done.

ps The Sensors only measure one inch across and each has about an eighth beyond the hole size hiding any chipping which may occur if the boring is done too quickly.

PARKING SENSORS TO 500SEL

Had the rear bumper off to stop the chromes disintegrating any further (Serious rusting in the corners - Jenolite, Spray paint, Waxoil and finally expanding gap filler, cutting off surplus) so ideal time to put in some Reversing Sensors, thinks I.

Where to put them? Bumper not ideal shape. Had to go onto an arch shape or would be pointing downward.

Took End Chrome overlap sections as starting point for two sensors. Divided area between by three and measure two further points. Applied Masking tape to area for drilling. Drill small bore - in my case needed to go through two skins as outer Bumper attached to inner strengthener made of fibreglass..

Hole borer did not do the job completely as insufficient space to accommodate outer core centre, because of arc shape. So, some minor cutting with a Stanley knife needed to remove first core.
Inner core could be cut from both top and underside with the bit, to remove.

Pop in the Sensors firstly checking which goes in which hole. They look the same but do have markings LLL, LC, RC, RRR. I didn't notice this until after I had siliconed them in at the back and left overnight. Not a problem, just switch the labels. Each input connector has a marked place on the Control Box so that the four are shown on the display in the correct position as to where an obstacle reads.

Where to feed the cabling? There are four rubber grommets on the back of the car but they lead into a box section and not into the boot. Decided not to drill into the box section as it has a waxoil spray inside. So, made a new hole underneath Bracket point.

The Display I placed on Parcel shelf, having discovered that the corners of the Shelf tray have a Slit (drainage?) hole in them. Widened one of the holes using a Hacksaw in the boot. Thread lead into boot and hid behind rear wing lining exiting at rear light unit.

Removed Rear Light unit from lead and took in doors to solder connections. Removed plate with bulbs. Soldered pos to rear of Rear Light bulb lead and made a new hole in Aluminium plate for earth fix. Cut out a hole below the lead path out of the unit to accommodate the twin lead and left 90% of the lead to the Control Box neatly tied inside the Black plastic housing, below light bulbs. Trailed out the Control Box and affixed to the Black Plastic housing. Could have it anywhere you want.

Ran the Display cable through the wing inserts to the control Box.

Bingo - Signal on full pitch about fourteen inches (0.04m) to target. Time it all took? well I'm a slow methodical worker and did it in seperate phases so probably three hours?

Photo's to follow courtesy of Mercmonkey if he picks up on my email?

Why dont you just fit one of those rectangular rubber "plates" (cant remember their name) with the "circles" they just stick onto the back window. Mind you there not much good for saloons, as they need the back window more/less straight up n down, but for est's and hatche's ;-), there about £8-13 depending on size.

A mate got one years ago and I tried it, they are ****** great!, you can park within inches literally, not that you want to do that obviously, but you can.

I have used one for years they are good, I bought some reversing sensors back and front 3 years ago and they are still in the box.
