Hi I am new to this site
My car has been in for repair since July 4th waiting for two parts. I was told yesterday one of the parts is not going to be available till January 2024 (yes 2024) anyone else experiencing problems or have any suggestions?

Welcome,

Sorry to hear this!

What parts are you waiting for presumably something that stops you using the car?

A radiator bracket and a brake housing unit (does contain a microchip) unfortunately it is not possible to drive the car at the moment.
Currently driving a Citroen provided by insurance company!!

Oh, the microchip saga.

As an aside I didn’t realise that Taiwan produce 40+ of the world supply which is quite a disturbing fact in view of China’ rhetoric something needs to change there

It was 2/3rds of the global semiconductor by one single company just 4 years ago, scary stuff indeed

Apparently not it’s an S500 cabriolet so not many of them about.
I suspect my insurance company are going to write it off as I can’t see them hiring me a car for a further 14 months even if it is a Citroen

Hello and welcome
Insurance companies don't use used parts. When we had a coil pack catch fire on a our Alfa Spider and needed 1 new coil pack a spark plug lead (plus labour to fit it) the cost wrote the 12 year old car off. I told the insurance company to use second hand parts. I'm sorry sir we only quote for new parts. I had a choice though, repair myself, which meant not claiming. I thought it bazaar at the time, as this insurer would not allow the buy back option.
So Alfa was written off for the cost of £40 used parts plus a hour labour to fit
New cost parts was over £1500!!

The one part is £15 and the other is £400 so it’s not the cost of them it’s just the supply and if the 2024 date can’t be moved it’s the cost of a car to keep me in the road till I get mine back

They have asked the body shop to provide photos as to where the repair is currently at ( all the paint work has been done)
I guess they have to also consider providing me with a car until January 2024

Welcome to the forum. The parts fiasco is well known unfortunately.
Read the T and C of your insurance re the courtesy car - usually 7 days or a week.
Strange the insurance co greenlighted the job when parts are not available - big fail there side and ammunition for you.

That's weird. Insurers can't refuse to give your own car back to you, even if they've taken it to their repairer. It was still your property or had they settled the claim when you asked to buy it back?

Not quite true. Taiwan doesn’t (and didn’t, 4 years ago) have 2/3 or even 40% of global silicon wafer production volume, but they do have 40% of global production volume of a particular- let’s say device, used to build fab lines around, which in turn produce the end product.

The interconnectedness of the whole electronics fab industry is jawdropping. And the U.K. and Germany are hugely vital parts…
