I have a PDA with TomTom loaded and use in the car with the usual cigarette lighter power plug. I want to "hard wire" the power supply into the car's wiring. Where would be the best power pick up point to wire into? Apart from an in-line 2A fuse, would I need any other interface between the device and the power source?

Very basic question I know, but help from someone out there would be very much appreciated!

Best place is at the back of the cigarette lighter socket.

If you want to save a bit of hassle, buy a cig lighter socket from Maplin, get a short length of 2-core flex, and wire the Maplin socket to the back of your car socket. Then plug your Tomtom lead into the Maplin socket, tape it up and wrap with foam, and hide it all away.

That way you don't have to damage your TomTom lead and you can unplug it easily if you go on holiday for instance.

Hi Parrot of Doom, thanks for the quick response.
I have a spare mini USB/cigarette lighter connector so thought I'd cannibalise it. Does the cigarette lighter plug in unit do anything other than take off the 12V DC supply from the cig lighter socket? (e.g. transform the power supply).
Could I therefore just cut off the cig lighter plug in and wire direct to the back of the existing cig lighter socket (with an in-line 2A fuse)?

Why not try one of this, it saves you and next guy/gal who will inherit your car a lot of hassle : http://www.bury.com/en/hands-free-car-kits/uni-system-8/uni-take-talk-cradle/
