My E280 is running well but a friend has just had his '89 Range Rover "Superchiped" and the difference is dramatic. Has anyone tried one of there on a w124, or maybe changed the air filter for a fast-flow K 'n' N? Any ideas gratefully received.

Also, when changing gear (auto) the diff makes a low grunt / boom sound. It's not at all loud and the change is smooth. Does this indicate a problem (I'm probably just being paranoid coz my last-but-1 w124 died of a busted diff).
Thanks

The noise when shifting may be worn diff bushes or worn prop doughnuts. Or worn engine mounts or gearbox mount. Or a worn diff with an oval input bearing due to the diff moving around. Or a worn rear suspension arm

With respect, owning a car of this age is about trying to get more life out of it for as little outlay as possible rather than make it go faster!
In another thread someone was talking about fitting sportsline suspension to their 124 from a breaker....utter madness

..Any 14 year old suspension parts wil be way past their best.

Hi,

I've got a K&N replacement element. I bought it because it breaths better and has a longer life than standard filters. I don't notice any improvement in performance, although in theory it should be a tad more efficient and responsive.

I've read other threads on here which say don't fit a K&N if you have a MAF sensor as the oil from the filter can damage them.

On a standard tune engine the breathing is not restricted. Why should it be ?
If it was the intake would be bigger.
Oiled filters don't do MAF's anygood.
